Holy Spirit, Lord of

Diocesan Pastoral Congress
Bishop Philip celebrated Solemn Evening Prayer in St. Mirin's
Cathedral on Thursday 8th May 2008 as part of the Diocesan Pastoral
Congress. Members of Diocesan Organisations, Parish Pastoral Councils, parish
and local groups heard the Bishop reflect on the current situation of the
Diocese and suggest some areas which are the focus for evangelisation.
Bishop Philip is the President of the National Communications
Commission. He has sent a message to the parishes in Scotland for the 42nd World
Communications Day
40th Anniversary of St. Bernadette's Parish, Erskine
On Sunday 27th April, Bishop Philip
celebrated Mass with Fr. David Cotter and the Parish
Community of St. Aidan's in Johnstone at the conclusion
of the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the
opening of the Church. In his homily he said,
This 40th Anniversary Year has been a
most challenging and most significant year for this
parish community. St. Aidan’s Parish and the former
St. Anthony’s Parish have come together under the
roof of this very fine church., and this not long
after the merger of Our Holy Redeemer, Elderslie,
with St. Aidan’s. So these have been years of no
little change for the communities which now make up
the parish community of St. Aidan’s. And, despite
justifiable sadness and trepidation, and despite
expected and probably some unexpected problems, all
the signs are that things have gone well and the
parish is going forward to fulfil its mission in
this area. And I know that everyone, priests, parish
councils, and parishioners have played their part
impressively and with a real sensitivity to the good
of this community, of this town and of the diocese.
If you want to know if the Holy Spirit is a reality
in our lives and in our communities, just look at
your own recent experience as a parish, and I think
that thankfully, humbly, joyfully, you and we will
be able to perceive the Spirit of God at work among
you.
Pope Benedict XVI at the last World Youth Day,
speaking to a vast number of young people about
vocations, caught their imagination with the question,
“If not you, then who?” I say to you today, “Let it be
you!”
Father, raise up among Christians
abundant and holy vocations to the priesthood,
who keep the faith alive
and guard the blessed memory of your Son Jesus
through the preaching of his word
and the administration of the Sacraments,
with which you continually renew your faithful.
Grant us holy ministers of your altar,
who are careful and fervent guardians of the Eucharist,
the sacrament of the supreme gift of Christ
for the redemption of the world.
Call ministers of your mercy,
who, through the sacrament of Reconciliation,
spread the joy of your forgiveness.
Grant, O Father, that the Church may welcome
with joy
the numerous inspirations of the Spirit of your Son
and, docile to His teachings,
may she care for vocations to the ministerial priesthood
and to the consecrated life.
Sustain the Bishops, priests and deacons,
consecrated men and women, and all the baptized in Christ,
so that they may faithfully fulfil their mission
at the service of the Gospel.
This we pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Mary, Queen of Apostles, pray for us.
